He is informally dressed in a loose brown robe over a white shirt: his hair is in a simple style, naturally grey white and collar length. In his right hand Evelyn holds a copy of his book Sylva (1664), its title and author surname on the red spine label. John Evelyn was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663.
